5 Must-See Destinations for History Buffs in Volusia County

There’s something special about living in a place with history—where you can learn something new about your surroundings every day, and be inspired by the old stories while you write your new ones!

Volusia County is one of the Sunshine State’s most historically rich communities. As your trusted team of Daytona Beach realtors and relocation experts, Frank Bruno and Jim Dinneen are here to help guide you on a virtual tour of a few of our favorite historical points of interest. Take a look below to learn more.

The Casements

If you’re considering a move to Ormond Beach and Volusia County, well, you’re following in some serious footsteps! The Casements was the home of John D. Rockefeller in the early 1900s (he also welcomed such contemporaries as Thomas Edison and Henry Ford). The gorgeous property, located on the Halifax River, is a must-see destination for history buffs and nature lovers alike. The whole family can take a stroll through the riverfront garden setting and enjoy the view with ease.

Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse

Florida’s tallest lighthouse has seen the Sunshine State through wars, hurricanes and everyday history. The Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse, noted for its beautiful red exterior and towering presence, even helped author Stephen Crane to shore following a shipwreck in 1897. Today, you can learn more about the lighthouse and those who have cared for it throughout the years by stopping for a visit and climb! Or, simply enjoy the view from the water or surrounding area.

Daytona Beach Bandshell and Coquina Clock Tower

The Daytona Beach Bandshell and Coquina Clock Tower, both beloved landmarks for Daytona Beach residents and visitors alike, were constructed after the Great Depression to revitalize the local area—and the rest, as they say, is history! Today, the structures, both constructed out of coquina composed of broken seashells, are part of a thriving entertainment complex where special gatherings, concerts and other unique events happen all year long.

The Athens Theatre

DeLand’s Athens Theatre is about to turn 100, making it one of Volusia County’s most charming historical destinations! The earliest acts at this gorgeous Italian renaissance-style building included classical vaudeville and live theatre, and it continues to serve as a center of arts and culture in Volusia County.

Dunlawton Plantation-Sugar Mill Ruins

History meets nature at the Dunlawton Plantation-Sugar Mill Ruins in Port Orange! Visit the remnants of old coquina and brick structures, nestled among a lush thicket, as well as life-sized dinosaur models fashioned out of chicken wire, originally intended for an area amusement park. Who knew such a unique piece of history could be found right around the corner from Port Orange’s popular parks, shopping and dining destinations?

Volusia County is where classic Florida charm meets modern thrills and family fun! Call The Relocation Authority today to learn more about what it’s like to live, work, learn and play in our one-of-a-kind county.
